The Aces (3-6) jumped on Chihuahuas starter Bryan Mitchell with 3 runs in the 1st and a run in the 2nd. Unfortunately, the offense went stagnant after that. Domingo Leyba had an RBI triple and Kevin Cron an RBI single in that first inning. The bullpen was shaky as Vinny Nittoli allowed the Chihuahuas to even it up in the 7th inning before giving way to Mark Rzepczynski, who completed the inning with no further damage. Stefan Crichton would then give up the go-ahead runs in the 8th and pitch a scoreless 9th inning to take the loss. (AA) Jackson Generals 0, Chattanooga Lookouts 5: A disastrous 6th inning came back to bit the Generals, as Sam Lewis and Tyler Mark allowed 5 runs to score that inning. Lewis got the first out and gave up two baserunners before giving way to Tyler Mark, who would walk in a run then give up a Grand Slam. On the other side of the ball, the Generals (3-5) hitters continued to struggle at the plate as they only managed 5 hits and struck out 13 times.(A+) Visalia Rawhide 6, San Jose Giants 2: Travis Moths struggled with control, walking 3 and allowing 3 hits Khris Davis Jersey , but limited the damage to 2 runs. Jake McCarthy extended his hit streak to 5 with a pair of doubles, the first one giving the Rawhide (5-4) a 1st inning lead they never relinquished. After starting the season 0 for 12 with 8 Ks, McCarthy has since gone 7 for 18 with 4 XBH (2 2B, 2 3B), a 7/4 K/BB ratio, and 3/3 in stolen base attempts. Visalia then piled on with 2 runs each in the 4th and 5th innings. Camden Duzenack and Jose Caballero had RBI singles in the 4th and Jancarlos Cintron had a 2-run single in the 5th. The bullpen was outstanding with 5 shutout innings in relief, with Kevin McCanna, Kyler Stout, and Matt Brill combining to allow just 1 hit and 1 walk while punching out 5. (A) Kane County Cougars 12, Peoria Chiefs 2: Everything was clicking for Kane County (6-3) as the pitching and offense were both great. Franklyn Soriano posted five zeros while the offense went to work. They chased the Peoria starter with a 3 spot in the first that included a home run from Eduardo Diaz. A 5-run 6th inning blew the game open after the Cougars loaded the bases in the frame. A HBP, single, then double followed for the 5 runs in that inning. Zachery Almond had 4 hits and drove in 4 of the 12 runs to lead the offense. Alex King drove in 3 and pretty much every Cougar hitter except David Garza, who went 0 for 4 with 3 Ks, reached base and contributed in some form to the score.

Mandatory Credit: Joe CamporealeJoe Camporeale-USA TODAY SportsSalvador Perez debuted in August of 2011, and after eight seasons of watching the lovable Venezuelan we have retconned that event into being just another debut in a year filled with them. However, it was anything but that. Perez entered the season as a 20-year-old catcher whose greatest professional accomplishment to date was completing one single season at High-A Wilmington. Perez ended the year in the big leagues, the proud new owner of a multi-year and multi-million dollar extension. The Royals organization loved Perez. Bob Dutton wrote about Perez in February of 2011 in an article that is a spot-on and unnerving description considering his big league career:Still, though Dutton wrote that the catching future for the Royals “might be sooner than once imagined,” and that “More than ever, [his] timetable is under review,” nowhere in the piece does Dutton or any Royals staff insinuate that Perez could have been an August call-up. Indeed, Perez’s meteoric rise through the minor league system happened in spite of his total absence from any league-wide top prospect lists. Baseball-America ranked him as the 17th-best prospect in the Royals’ farm system.Of course, we know what happened. Perez started the year in Double-A Northwest Arkansas. After holding his own, the Royals promoted him to Triple-A Omaha, where again he held his own. Then, after 12 games, the Royals called Perez up to the bigs. The Royals valued Perez’s defensive impact highly enough that merely adequate offense propelled him to Kansas City. The Royals had also clearly targeted Perez as the Catcher of the Future A. J. Pollock Jersey , and when he performed up to par in a year in which there was an open spot for him, he made a move for that spot and the Royals obliged to promote him.Why the history lesson? Well, there’s an interesting situation playing out this year that has parallels to 2011. Perez will play zero games for the Royals this year after getting Tommy John surgery on his elbow. And while Kansas City picked up Martin Maldonado as a stopgap option, he’s on a one-year deal that will be attractive midseason trade bait. Like 2011, the Royals are bad, and like 2011 they are looking to turn to younger players. Most interestingly, the Royals have another young, fascinating catcher in the minor leagues. MJ Melendez doesn’t have the raw size of Perez, but Melendez’s 6’1” frame is an extremely athletic one. Like Perez, Melendez is getting some prospect hype even though he’s not on any top 100 lists yet; J.J. Cooper wrote in Baseball-America in January that Melendez is a potential breakout candidate, citing Melendez’s strong arm, athleticism, and in-game power. Like Perez, Melendez spent his age-19 season at Low-A Lexington and is poised to begin his age-20 season, also like Perez, at High-A Wilmington. Is Melendez likely to debut in the big leagues this year? The answer http://www.diamondbacksfa...-greinke-jersey , just like the answer for anybody making their High-A debut at the beginning of the season, is no. Very few players make that jump. But a read between the lines of general manager Dayton Moore’s quotes about Melendez after announcing Perez’s surgery are certainly curious. On one hand, Dave Skretta of AP Sports reported that Moore stressed that “the Royals have no intention of rushing MJ Melendez...to the big leagues,” a sentiment cemented by the signing of Maldonado. But Moore’s other quote about Melendez is far more interesting:Could this be GM speak—the type of quote that ultimately means nothing because Moore has to say something to reporters? Maybe. Certainly, parsing quotes like this is mostly a waste of time. It is, however, curious that Moore said this specifically when it could have been just as easy to blather something about letting Melendez develop and he’s ready when he’s ready and whatnot and forthwith. Melendez isn’t Perez, and there’s no guarantee he’ll succeed. You can frame comparisons between the two positively or negatively depending on your perspective. Melendez has hit for at least 21% above league average both seasons he’s played professionally, which is quite impressive and significantly better than Perez performed at the same age. However, Melendez has struck out three times as often as Perez did, raising legitimate concerns about his hit tool further up the minor league chain. And while Melendez is a good fielder, he’s not the fielder Perez was (and is, bum arm aside). But, like in 2011, the catcher spot in the big leagues is up for the taking. With a strong start to the year, Melendez could be that guy. And even if he’s not that guy this year Shelby Miller Jersey , he could make a strong move to make his debut early next year. As Gandalf the White once said: The board is set. The pieces are moving. Keep your eye on Melendez. Just like last time, the next Royals franchise catcher could be here sooner than you might think. When Seattle’s Edwin Diaz took the mound in a save situation Saturday night, it was the first time in 11 games he had such an opportunity.Such is the life of a closer.Despite some two-out drama, Diaz struck out the side in the ninth inning of a 4-1 victory over the visiting Texas Rangers for his 57th save, tying Bobby Thigpen of the 1990 Chicago White Sox for second on Major League Baseball’s season list.Article continues below ...After striking out the first two batters in the inning, the Rangers loaded the bases on an error, a hit batter and pinch-hitter Joey Gallo’s infield single. But Diaz fanned Jurickson Profar for the final out.“It’s an unbelievable number,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said of 57 saves. “It’s so hard to do that. All the one-run saves, the workload, staying focused all year long … it takes a special talent. It’s been really fun to watch him all year long. It’s a blessing to have him at the end of the bullpen. …“When the bell rings in the ninth inning, he’s ready to get it on.”In the Mariners’ previous 10 games, they won four times — three by blowouts and the other in 11 innings. That thwarted Diaz’s bid to reach Francisco Rodriguez’s major-league record of 62 saves set in 2008.“It’s been tough,” Diaz told MLB.com. “I want to pitch, I want to save games. I got used to seeing close games every night, now we’re winning by a lot. But that’s fine. It’s a long season. When they give me the ball, I’m ready to go.”It appeared Diaz might get a chance Friday night Chris Owings Jersey , when the Rangers rallied from a nine-run deficit to close within 9-6 in the eighth inning. While Diaz was warming up in the bullpen, the Mariners scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to nullify the save opportunity.“That’s fine. That’s part of the game,” Diaz said. “I can’t be mad, I have to support my team.”Diaz said he has already surpassed his own expectations.“My goal was 40 saves before the season started,” he said. “I’m at (57) and it’s pretty special to me. I worked hard to get ready for this season, and I feel like I helped the team win a lot of games.”Diaz might get one more chance Sunday afternoon when the Mariners and Rangers meet in the regular-season finale.Texas right-hander Yovani Gallardo (8-7, 6.40 ERA) is scheduled to take on Seattle left-hander Roenis Elias (2-1, 2.93). Gallardo is 3-2 with a 2.54 ERA in five career starts against the Mariners; Elias is 2-2 with a 2.37 ERA in seven previous appearances against the Rangers, including five starts. The season series between the Mariners (88-73) and the last-place Rangers (67-94) is tied 9-9 heading into the finale. Seattle has a winning record against every other team in the American League West this season.Rangers interim manager Don Wakamatsu said 21-year veteran Adrian Beltre, who is considering retirement, will start at third base Sunday after serving as the designated hitter each of the previous two games.“I think it’s only befitting that he does that, especially because he played here (in Seattle from 2005 to 2009), too,” Wakamatsu said. “He talks about finishing strong and finishing the season, and here he is. He wants to play third base on the last day of the season.”

Bedrosian has no options left so he’s a sure thing on opening day.Noe Ramirez - Ramirez did not have a great season in 2018 - especially the second half. Given that he’s out of options, the Angels aren’t likely to cut ties with him before the season starts unless his spring is a mess.Dan Jennings - The new dude George Bell Jersey , and left replacement for Jose Alvarez. He’s not current on the 40 man roster but will likely be moved there before the season starts.Luis Garcia - The other new dude who could lose his spot with a rough spring but he’s also out of options.Likely making the cut:Ty Buttrey - Buttrey has options, but it’s hard to imagine a situation in which he doesn’t make the opening day roster based on what he did in 2018.Justin Anderson - Another pleasant surprise in 2018 but he grew more and more wild as the season went on. He has a good shot of making the roster but is not a lock.Next TierJake Jewell - Only 2 IP in 2018 due to a freak injury. We’ll see him at some point, just maybe not to start the season.Taylor Cole - Cole is a guy who could bump Anderson or someone above for a spot if he has a good spring.Depending on how the season shakes out, all of these guys below could see some time on the big league roster but it is HIGHLY unlikely any of them make the cut for the 25-man. Instead, they’ll be keeping the bullpen bench warm in Salt Lake for much or the season.Williams Jerez*John Curtiss*Daniel Hudson*Jeremey Rhoades*Matt Ramsey*Luke Bard*Ryan Clark*Miguel Almonte It’s a busy day in Birdland. First, we found out Buck Showalter wouldn’t be back as manager. Now, Ken Rosenthal reports that Dan Duquette will be out of the front office as well."Wednesday was a busy afternoon in the Warehouse. Early in the afternoon, the Orioles and manager Buck Showalter were reported to be parting ways. Later on in the evening, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal struck again with a scoop that Dan Duquette, the executive vice president of baseball operations, is not expected to be retained. That is a lot of upheaval for one day.Duquette Dave Winfield Jersey , whose contract is set to expire at this season’s official conclusion, has spent the last several months acting like a man who thinks he’s coming back, perhaps because he had no choice but to do so. As the team launched its rebuild trades, the players Duquette got back will have a big impact on how short of a time the franchise spends in the doldrums. He talked about things that need to change in the front office as if he would be the one overseeing those improvements. In that way, it is a surprise that the Orioles have chosen to move on from Duquette. If they were going to let him go at season’s end, why did they let him trade players like Kevin Gausman and Jonathan Schoop, who were not free agents this year? Perhaps he should have been fired months ago rather than left around as a lame duck to make those deals. Perhaps it doesn’t matter. In another way, it’s not surprising at all that the Orioles are going to have a different general manager, or whatever title they prefer to give the next person occupying that role. The Orioles were just 47-115. Duquette was the architect of the roster that put up that record. His trades, his signings, his draft picks Jack Morris Jersey , and his other assorted moves put the Orioles where they are now. There is no compelling reason to keep anyone who has presided over such a disaster. It may be, given the general impression of dysfunction in the Orioles front office, that Duquette was not entirely responsible for some of the bad decisions that were made. That’s the way it goes. Cot’s Contracts information shows that Duquette has been making “about $2 million annually,” which is a good paycheck to cushion the impact of being the fall guy.Notable in the vein of that dysfunction: We have heard about Buck Showalter and now we have heard about Duquette. What is the future of Brady Anderson? Is he going to be the next GM? Is the next GM going to have to accept that Anderson will be weirdly lurking, answerable only to someone named Angelos, sticking his nose in at unpredictable intervals? Are they going to make it a clean sweep and send him packing as well? The Orioles offered at least a partial answer to the Brady question in a press release with the mild title of “Orioles announce transition in baseball operations leadership.” That might not be all the way into George Orwell territory, but it’s heading there. In the release, the O’s announced that the next leader of the baseball operations department will come outside of the organization. The release also claims that “this individual will have the final determination on all baseball matters that he or she believes will make the Orioles successful on the field, entertaining to fans, and impactful in the community.” It’s good that they said that. Whether they follow through with it is something that I think still remains to be settled.

FanGraphs has their Depth Chart predictions which take into account Steamer, Depth Charts (aka predicting playing time), and ZiPS - the later of which are not yet out Brad Boxberger Jersey , so these numbers may change once those are released.Instead of focusing on every single player (though their data is included below), I’m going to take a stab at which players will outperform their projections and which players may under perform. I didn’t include the players who I thought would perform close to their predictions which was quite of few of them.OVERMike Trout (.441 OBP / 9.3 WAR)Trout just keeps getting better and everyone knows it. If he doesn’t get himself injured again in 2019, he should easily outperform his current estimates. In the past three years, Trout’s OBP has been .441, .442, .460 while his WAR has been 9.6, 6.9, 9.8. Keep in mind that the 9.8 was ONLY over 140 games. After two years in which Trout averaged only 127 games, the Angels really need him to stay healthy all season - and if he does it’s a no brainer what his final numbers will look like.Shohei Ohtani (26 HR, 2.7 WAR)Ohtani’s power is ridiculous and although pitchers will adjust to him - so will he adjust. Not only that, Ohtai has not yet reached peak power age and if he get at least 490 PA’s as is projected, he might just hit 30+ home runs. I see Ohtani as a 30 HR / 15 SB guy if he gets to 500 PAs, and he certainly has a shot at 3+ WAR as well.Andrelton Simmons (102 wRC+ Daniel Descalso Jersey , 4.2 WAR)Simba has been a huge offensive boost for the Angels over the past two seasons and has improved each year in lowering his K rate, increasing BABIP and AVG, and putting up two back to back 5+ WAR seasons with wRC+ of 103 an 109. All that and he doesn’t turn 30 until the end of the season so there is every reason to believe he can keep performing at that 5+ WAR pace for at least another year or two.David Fletcher (.312 OBP, 1.9 WAR)In 2018, Fletcher put up a 1.9 WAR in just 80 games. FanGraphs has him projected at 143 games in 2019 which should be the case unless Rengifo steals his job and Cozart looks like his 2017 version. I expect that he will mature as a hitter and top his .316 from last year to put him somewhere in the .320+ range and 2.0+ WAR.Keynan Middleton (3.94 ERA, 25 IP)Middleton will be coming back from TJ surgery, but all indications are that his rehab is going well. It’s not unrealistic to see him toss more in the 30 inning range, especially if he returns in June. In two seasons, Middleton has a career 3.43 ERA and 4.24 FIP with the Angels, both of which I seem him improving upon in 2019.Ty Buttrey (3.71 ERA, 0.5 WAR)Buttrey has some very impressive moments in 2018, including a 0.8 WAR and 3.31 ERA in 16.1 IP.He has the stuff to be a solid piece as the back end of the bullpen and should at least match his 2018 ERA and probably go over 1.0 WAR.UNDERKole Calhoun (.242 AVG, 21 HR Ketel Marte Jersey , 2.0 WAR)If you are to believe the middle of Calhoun’s season last year, then the above numbers may be possible. However, Calhoun is getting older and he struggled in a huge way at the beginning of the season as well as at the end in which he hit only .125 over the last month of the season. The Angels need Calhoun to be better than that but I don’t see him hitting any of the above numbers in 2019.Zack Cozart (.315 OBP, 3.1 WAR)First, Cozart needs to come back strong from a pretty major surgery. On top of that, he has only had one season in his career in which he put up a WAR greater than 2.0 (5.0 in 2017). Cozart also has a career .304 OBP and has only gone to .315 or higher once in his career as well (also in 2017). Those numbers are aggressive for Cozart who may end up in the 1.0-2.0 WAR range and closer to a .300 or .310 OBP.Albert Pujols (.299 OBP, 0.1 WAR)The projections aren’t kind of Pujols who is predicted to only make 100 games and 420 plate appearances. However, his OBP hasn’t been above .289 since 2016 and he has back to back negative fWAR seasons. If Pujols can have a postive fWAR and an OBP near .300 I’d call that a win but it doesn’t seem possible as he continues to break down.Cam Bedrosian (4.05 ERA, 0.2 WAR)Bedrosian has been on a decline the past 3 years and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s not on the team by mid season. Over the past 3 seasons his K rate has gone down each year while his walk rate has gone up. Bedrosian has also seen his average fastball velocity dip 3 MPH since 2016 and he just isn’t missing that many bats.FULL PROJECTIONS:Position Player ProjectionsNameGPA2B3BHRRRBIBBSOSBAVGOBPSLGOPSWARNameGPA2B3BHRRRBIBBSOSBAVGOBPSLGOPSWARStarter ProjectionsNameWLERAGIPHERHRSOBBWHIPK/9BB/9FIPWARNameWLERAGIPHERHRSOBBWHIPK/9BB/9FIPWARBullpen ProjectionsNameWLSVERAIPHERHRSOBBWHIPK/9BB/9FIPWARNameWLSVERAIPHERHRSOBBWHIPK/9BB/9FIPWAR

Carlos Carrasco earned the loss after surrendering six runs on ten hits in fewer than five innings. Michael Pineda pitched four innings of shutout baseball in his first start since the middle of 2017, setting the stage for Martin Perez to earn the win out of the bullpen. How did things go awry? The Twins opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning on a Willians Astudillo double to left center. Leonys Martin nearly made an excellent play, but his lunge for the catch came up just short. The ball hopped to the wall and allowed the first run of the game to score. They jumped to a 3-0 lead after another Astudillo double hopped the wall to put runners on second and third. Both of these came around to score on a scorched Byron Buxton double down the left field line. Nelson Cruz added one in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run no-doubt bomb to left. Another run scored off of Neil Ramirez when Jonathan Schoop singled in a run later in the inning. Yet more runs scored when Carlos Santana cut-off a throw on a sacrifice fly and attempted to nail Cruz at third base, but he lobbed it over Jose Ramirez’s head instead. It was not a good inning. The final run of the game came off of Shane Bieber after he plunked Astudillo and gave up two hits. He pitched two innings of relief, because apparently you can’t just bump Kluber’s start back and let Bieber actually have a normal start. Did anything good happen? In the top of the 8th inning, the Indians finally got something going. Eric Stamets drew a walk with one out, followed by a strikeout by Max Moroff. With two outs http://www.rangersfanpros...tt-moore-jersey , Jose Ramirez and Jake Bauers singled to road the bases. Santana ripped a bases-clearing double to left, putting three runs on the board for the Indians and cutting the deficit to five. Hanley Ramirez struck out looking to end the inning, along with all of the excitement for Indians fans. Despite his earlier miscues, Santana finished the game 4-4 (one of these should have been an error, and he got thrown out anyway) with 3 RBIs. It wasn’t all bad for the Indians offense overall, as the rest of the team contributed two additional hits and six walks. The Indians struck out 13 times for the third consecutive game. The Indians offense isn’t going to be this cold forever, and Francisco Lindor will be back eventually. That doesn’t make it any more exciting at the moment http://www.rangersfanpros...tt-moore-jersey , however. What happened to Carrasco? Carrasco struggled with command today, but not the way we usually assume when someone mentions command issues. Rather than walking a bunch of hitters, his pitches floated back over the center of the strike zone. Kevin Plawecki consistently set targets in the corners, and when Carrasco hit them he looked like the top-tier talent we’ve grown accustomed to. To bad the Twins’ lineup features too many quality hitters to get away with mistakes over the center of the plate. What’s next for the Cleveland Indians? The Tribe heads home and face the Chciago White Sox at 4:10 PM. The Dodgers are surely hoping that there is some kind of supernatural power in that anniversary as they host Game 3 of their NLCS against the Brewers tonight. The NLCS is knotted at one game apiece, with the next three to be played in front of the LA crowd. The series might not make it back to Milwaukee! That’s to be determined over the next three days as the Brewers look to turn their strange bullpen-heavy pitching concoction into a triumphant postseason team. It might work. Stranger things have happened. The game is set to get going on FS1 tonight at 7:39. 162 rankings later http://www.giantsfanprosh...longoria-jersey , here’s what we find."On Monday, e D-backs bullpen this year, covering both the relievers on the 40-man roster, and the non-roster invitees. 162 of you took up your mice and accepted the challenge, so here are the results. I’ve divided the list below into three blocks. The first are the top seven in the rankings, whom we have decided are the “best” relievers we have. The next half-dozen represent those who will most likely be called upon as coverage for injury, fatigue or ineffectiveness. Finally, are those who are seen as long-shots: however, it is worth remembering that Arizona used eighteen “proper” relievers last year (excluding emergency use of starters and position players). Each player is preceded by their average ranking in the poll, e.g. Archie Bradley was generally slightly above the #2 spot. The bullpen1.9: Archie Bradley2.4: Yoshihisa Hirano3.8: Greg Holland5.0: Andrew Chafin5.8: T.J. McFarland7.6: Yoan Lopez7.9: Jimmie SherfyThe instructions for the poll were not to consider the option situation in considering your rankings. This should be a pure qualitative assessment. But the top five basically turned out more or less as you’d expect. You might argue with the rankings - I’d put the guy with the 2.44 ERA last year, ahead of the one with the 3.64 ERA -but it does seem that Bradley, Hirano, Holland Matt Williams Jersey , Chafin and McFarland are all locks for the Opening Day bullpen, health permitting. According to Roster Resource, Archie and Andrew each have one option left; Hirano has three. However, it’s hard to envisage any of them being sent to the minors unless things go very wrong. It’s the last two spots which are most interesting, in terms of debate. Our voters went for Lopez and Sherfy, apparently showing a preference for flame-throwing right-handers! However, in terms of track record, they have both shown impressive stuff. Over his first 26 regular season games, Sherfy has an ERA of 1.00, while Lopez had a K:BB ratio of 11:1 over his nine innings of work. They have three and one option seasons left respectively, so both could be moved up and down to the minors without issue. However, those options may mean they potentially lose out in the final reckoning, to those without them? The taxi squad8.5: Silvino Bracho9.3: Matt Andriese9.5: Matt Koch11.5: Rubby De La Rosa13.0: Braden Shipley13.9: Kevin GinkelBus-pass Bracho would be one such pitcher http://www.giantsfanprosh...longoria-jersey , though the team certainly got its use out of his option year in 2018. It would be no surprise if the team swapped either Sherfy or Lopez out of the list above, in order to retain Bracho’s services this season. Koch is in the same boat, also being out of options, though his career 5.50 fielding-independent ERA (compared to a 4.04 actual ERA) does suggest he has perhaps been skating by on smoke and mirrors so far. Andriese and Shipley each have one option left, and can probably get their suitcases packed. De La Rosa is also out of options, but isn’t on the 40-man roster at this point, and presumably would not be until added. Quite impressed to see Ginkel make it (albeit just) into this middle group, considering he hasn’t appeared above Double-A. But he looked impressive in the Arizona Fall League, with a K:BB of 17:2 in just 10.2 innings. Obviously, options are not a problem there, but he appears one to watch, perhaps in the second half of the season. The fringes14.1: Stefan Crichton14.2: Nick Green 14.3: Joey Krehbiel14.8: Robby Scott15.9: Bo Takahashi16.4: Emilio VargasFinally, we have those who are seen as long shots for the Opening Day roster. All would present no roster construction problems Willie Mays Jersey , with the exception of Green. He was a Rule 5 pick last year, which means we have to keep him on the 25-man roster all season, or offer him back to the club from which he came. Based on these results, D-backs fans do not hold out much hope of that happening. Most of the rest are prospects, with the exception of Robby Scott, whose ranking here seems shockingly low, for a left-hander who has three seasons of MLB experience and a 3.91 career ERA. Those tend not to grow on trees, and I think even if he doesn’t make the roster, he’ll be considerably higher up the waiting list than shown here. The ACTUAL Opening Day rosterWe now move into the second phase of this exercise, where you need to read the minds of Mike Hazen and Torey Lovullo. For you have to choose those whom you think actually will make the Opening Day roster. That takes into account not only pitching quality, but also the option situation, as outlined above. Below, is a form listing all 19 names (in random order) http://www.giantsfanprosh...longoria-jersey , but with a simple yes/no question: Will they make the Opening Day roster? Polls will be open for the next two days, and we’ll review the results on Friday. Link to form for mobile users. Manfred’s rule changing mission continues"Say what you want about Rob Manfred, but don’t call him someone who is fine with the way things are. He’s push on a hard push to change many MLB rules since he took office. Thanks to Jeff Passan, we have some details on new proposed changes for MLB owners to talk about.A three-batter minimum for pitchersWhile I’m not a fan of using 4 pitchers in an inning, I’m not sure how this will go over. If someone just doesn’t have it, watching them struggle through 3 batters is going to be rough. I get that it’s meant to prevent all the matchup changes, but it could have some bad side effects. Maybe I’d be more in for a 2 batter minimum.A universal designated hitterYes please! I used to hate this and though - the pitchers just need to learn how to hit better. But let’s face it. They don’t. Let’s have the DH everywhere so we don’t have to watch the 9 hole hitter bunt horribly every time they come up.A single trade deadline before the All-Star breakI’m more of a fan of two deadlines. One at All-Star Break and one maybe in December. Not sure about the one deadline but my feelings aren’t real strong on this one either.A 20-second pitch clockSure. Only when no one is on base. Throw the damn ball! The expansion of rosters to 26 men, with a 12-pitcher maximumI like this one. Give another guy a job! Owners won’t like it because they’ll have to pay one more guy 500K+.Draft advantages for winning teams and penalties for losing teamsThis is a STUPID idea that will more often than not benefit juggernauts like the Dodgers, Yankees, Roid Sux, etc. Please make this idea go away. Who came up with this trash?Sure, it will prevent teams from tanking (no it won’t).A study to lower the moundA study? Okay. That’s fine. WhateverA rule that would allow two-sport amateurs to sign major league contractsJust say no. If an amateur can’t suck it up and sign a minor league contract like everyone else then go let him play football or basketball or whatever else he wants to do. Pay the dues like everyone else buddy!

Right after the draft was concluded, it was announced that Jackson had been traded to the Orioles for International Signing Bonus money. The Orioles will still be held to the same restrictions as the original drafting team. The Dodgers will receive $100K for each player taken from their system. If at any point, Connor Joe and/or Drew Jackson is removed from their team’s 25-man rosters, any team can claim him and then they would have the same restrictions for having a Rule 5 draft pick on their active roster. If no one claims the player, the Dodgers can pay $50K back to that team and get the player back. The Dodgers can also decide not to take the player back and then those players can be sent down to the original drafting team’s minor league system. As for the Dodgers, they have a full 40-man roster so they were not able to make a selection in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 Draft. And then http://www.tigersfanprosh...-jimenez-jersey , the Dodgers passed on taking anyone in the Minor League phase of the Rule 5 Draft. ATLANTA (AP) — Tyler Flowers isn’t a fan of pinch-hitting. On his memorable day, even that went right.Pinch-runner Adam Duvall scored the tiebreaking run on a delayed dash from third base and Flowers hit a two-run homer in Atlanta’s four-run eighth inning as the Braves beat Tampa Bay 9-5 on Tuesday night to snap the Rays’ eight-game winning streak.Flowers’ homer came after he agreed to a contract extension that could keep him in Atlanta through the 2020 season.“It was a pretty good day,” Flowers said. “All in all, it wasn’t too bad.”The homer was Atlanta’s sixth by pinch-hitters this season, tied for the most in the majors. Asked if he had become more comfortable as a pinch-hitter, Flowers said, “Not a bit, no.”Chaz Roe (1-3) walked Kurt Suzuki to open the eighth. Suzuki advanced to third on Ozzie Albies’ third hit, a double to the right-field corner.Duvall, running for Suzuki, initially remained at third base on Dansby Swanson’s groundout to second. When first baseman Jake Bauers looked to possibly throw to second, where Albies was standing off the bag, Duvall took off in a desperate sprint for the plate.Home plate umpire Chad Fairchild called Duvall safe on his slide under the tag of catcher Michael Perez Chad Bettis Jersey , beating Bauers’ throw. A video review lasting 1 minute, 45 seconds, confirmed the call.Bauers said he looked to second base because he thought Duvall was running on contact and already had scored. Then Bauers said he heard third baseman Matt Duffy yelling for him to throw to Perez.“I did my best to throw it home and get him,” Bauers said. “Obviously he snuck in.”Flowers’ homer landed in the Rays’ bullpen behind the left-field wall. Ender Inciarte, who drove in two runs on four hits, added another homer to center off Andrew Kittredge. The Rays suffered their first loss since Aug. 18 at Boston.“It just means we have to start again,” said Brandon Lowe, who hit his first homer, a two-run shot , in the sixth. “Losing stinks but now you can start another winning streak.”Brad Brach (2-3) recorded the final out in the eighth. The Rays loaded the bases off A.J. Minter with two outs in the ninth. Willy Adames’ groundout ended the game, and first-place Atlanta moved 4½ games ahead of Philadelphia in the NL East.Tampa Bay trailed 5-2 before Adames’ single off Jonny Venters in the eighth drove in Tommy Pham from second for a 5-5 tie. Nick Markakis doubled in two runs in Atlanta’s four-run fifth inning.Braves starter Julio Teheran gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings.TRAINER’S ROOMRays: OF Mallex Smith (viral infection) worked out at Tropicana Field after being released from the hospital Sunday. There is no timetable for his return to the team.Braves: RHP Arodys Vizcaino, who has been out since July 14 while on the DL for the second time this season with right shoulder inflammation, threw in the bullpen. Manager Brian Snitker said Vizcaino is “feeling good now” but needs to appear in a minor league rehab game before more is known about his outlook for this season.THE OPENERRays opener Ryne Stanek pitched a scoreless first inning before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the second. Yonny Chirinos allowed five runs Jonathan Lucroy Jersey , two earned, on seven hits and three walks in five innings.NEW DEALThe 32-year-old Flowers agreed to a $4 million contract for 2019 and a $6 million club option, with a $2 million buyout, for 2020.ERRORS HURTThe Rays led 2-1 before Ozzie Albies and Dansby Swanson opened the fifth with singles off the gloves of second baseman Joey Wendle and Duffy, respectively. Teheran’s bunt was mishandled by Bauers for an error and then picked up by Duffy, who threw low to first for another error, allowing Albies to score the tying run.UP NEXTRays: RHP Diego Castillo (3-2, 3.23 ERA) is expected to make only his third start when the two-game series concludes on Wednesday night. He has appeared in 30 games in relief.Braves: LHP Sean Newcomb (11-6, 3.57) will make his second start of the season against the Rays. He threw six scoreless innings in a 1-0 win on May 8 at Tampa Bay.

:INJURIES MOUNTINGThe Houston Astros are hoping for good news on All-Star outfielder George Springer http://www.giantsfanprosh...longoria-jersey , who exited Sunday’s loss to the Dodgers after hurting his left thumb on a headfirst slide. It’s unclear how long the 2017 World Series MVP might be out. “He was in a lot of pain,” manager AJ Hinch said. “He is going to get evaluated. Other than that I have no idea.” Before the game, the defending champs put pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. on the 10-day disabled list with right elbow discomfort. And star second baseman Jose Altuve (right knee soreness) was sent back to Houston for further examination. Last year’s AL MVP won’t come off the DL when eligible this week.PLAYOFF PREVIEW?Jake Arrieta (9-6, 3.32 ERA) pitches for the Phillies, looking for their sixth straight victory when they visit Arizona in a matchup of NL division leaders. Zack Godley (12-6, 4.46) goes for the Diamondbacks.HAMELS’ DAYCole Hamels makes his second start for the Cubs when they open a three-game series at last-place Kansas City. Hamels was acquired in a July 27 trade with Texas. The veteran lefty had been struggling with the Rangers, but he struck out nine while pitching five effective innings in a 9-2 victory at Pittsburgh in his Chicago debut last Wednesday.FISH STORYWill the fading Angels have Mike Trout back in the lineup when they host Detroit? The star outfielder has missed four consecutive games with a nagging right wrist injury. Trout hasn’t played since getting hurt while sliding on a steal attempt Wednesday at Tampa Bay. The 26-year-old slugger said Saturday night he still has soreness when he swings and throws. Trout had been expected back earlier, but his wrist hasn’t responded to treatment as hoped. X-rays and an MRI revealed inflammation. Trout is batting .309 with 30 home runs.THE REPLACEMENTLance Lynn makes his first start for the Yankees, facing the White Sox in Chicago. The right-hander was acquired from Minnesota last Monday and will take the rotation spot previously held by an inconsistent Sonny Gray, who was demoted to the bullpen. Lynn threw 4 1/3 shutout innings of relief with five strikeouts in his New York debut. The Yankees, coming off a four-game sweep by the rival Red Sox, have lost a season-high five straight and trail Boston by 9 1/2 games in the AL East.BACK IN GOTHAMMatt Harvey returns to Citi Field with Cincinnati and is expected to speak with reporters. The former Mets ace http://www.giantsfanprosh...longoria-jersey , traded to the Reds in May, is not scheduled to pitch in the three-game series. Noah Syndergaard (6-2, 2.98 ERA) gets the ball for New York in the opener against Homer Bailey (1-8, 5.87). A lefty-hitting college bat with prodigious power, Robertson has a skillset with universal appeal."MeasureablesHeight: 6’1”Weight: 210 lbs.Bats/throws: L/LAge: 21.5 yrs.Class: 4YR Jr.OverviewCreighton hasn’t produced a ton of major-league talent as a program- save for all-time great Bob Gibson who attended on a basketball scholarship- with its most notable recent products including Ty Blach, Pat Venditte and Darin “Babe” Ruf. Junior outfielder Will Robertson appears poised to be the first product to be selected in the top five rounds since the aforementioned Blach, and could potentially become the highest Jay drafted since Alan Benes went in round one in 1993. As a freshman in 2017, the previously unheralded Robertson announced his arrival by starting in all 49 games- the first Creighton freshman to do so since Ruf- and hitting .272 with fifteen extra base hits, earning him freshman All-American honors and a second-team All-Big East nod. Building on a strong debut, Robertson erupted in 2018 and led CU across the board in offense with a .333/.412/.641 slash line, 12 home runs (out of 33 extra base hits), 17 walks and 31 strikeouts. While his plate discipline numbers leave a bit to be desired Mark Melancon Jersey , Robertson was hitting everything- and hard- and aren’t indicative of a free-swinging approach on their own. Following his outstanding sophomore campaign, Robertson headed out to the Cape Cod League with the Cotuit Kettleers, where he showed well and ranked among the league’s best hitters statistically with a .300/.380/.435 slash in 192 PAs and 4 home runs with wood bats. Robertson is broadly built with a fairly maxed-out frame. His swing has a relatively long, power-oriented path with above-average bat speed. He doesn’t look like a future batting champ, but gets the barrel to the ball decisively and generates a lot of pop with his lower half. From the limited looks I have had, he seems to cover the plate well, and has the look of a potential heart-of-the-order bat as he refines his approach. His power should earn plus grades from most all evaluators. In the field, he may provide less value but has a chance to handle right field, or first base should his range prove lacking. At either spot, the pop in his bat projects to carry him. Typically, Omaha only becomes a focus for scouts when the College World Series gets underway, but in 2019 Robertson will serve as a season-long attraction at Jays home games. The young outfielder has already proven his capabilities as a hitter for power early in his college career Deion Sanders Jersey , and if he can quiet concerns about his future defensive home and hone his approach, he will be one of the most talked about players in the college game as the 2019 draft approaches. Projected Draft RoundMost outlets list Robertson among the best college position prospects in the class, typically just outside of first-round range. He projects as a day one selection, if not a first-rounder. Does he fit with Houston?I’m not sure Robertson is the prototypical Luhnow selection given his statistical profile, but his powerful, experienced bat should make him a consideration for Houston should he be on the board for their first couple of picks. MLB Player ComparisonA prototypical corner bat, there is no shortage of players to whom Robertson could be compared. An easy comp would be someone like Jay Bruce. VideoRobertson’s first name was listed as Jonathan on CCBL materials, and Will most everywhere else, to avoid confusion.

Who should be No. 10? Joseph CoblitzCatcher Bo Naylor is our No. 9 Cleveland Indians prospect after he was selected with the Indians first round draft pick at No. 29 overall in the 2018 MLB draft. At 18 years old, Bo Naylor is the younger brother of power-hitting Padres prospect Josh Naylor, but Bo appears to be the better athlete playing a position that will aid his prospect status.Bo Naylor debuted in the Arizona Rookie League last season and definitely looked like he belonged, sporting a .274/.381/.402 slashline in 139 plate appearances over 33 games while hitting a pair of home runs. He even flashed a little bit of speed with five steals.Naylor possesses solid power, but his hit tool grades a bit better than his ability to hit the long ball, which is a good thing. He also showcased a patient approach at the plate, walking at an elite 15.1 percent rate (although he did strike out 20.1 percent of the time).A big factor in Naylor staying a top Indians prospect will be whether or not he can stay behind the plate, where his offensive profile makes him one of the best catching prospects in baseball. Naylor has a strong arm and his athletic ability and size will allow him to stay at the position for now, but it’s worth keeping an eye on as his career continues. Another intriguing factor for Naylor is that he’s from Canada, which means he hasn’t spent quite the same amount of time on his craft compared to others in warmer climates, so there is still some serious potential for growth if the Tribe’s minor league coaching staff can tap into it.Look for Naylor to begin 2019 in Low-A Mahoning Valley as he continues moving up the organizational ladder. Norm Charlton, who is best known for his time with the Cincinnati Reds in the early 90s, turns 56 today. He had a horrific 36 games with the 1998 Orioles, pitching to a 6.94 ERA out of the bullpen. And finally, it’s the 86th birthday to Mr. Lenny Green. Happy birthday! Lenny Green was a center fielder for the Orioles from 1957-59 before being traded to the Washington Senators in May of ‘59. On this day in 2009, the Orioles signed pitcher Koji Uehara out of Japan to a two-year, $10 million contract. That was a good signing of a good pitcher. Koji was later traded to the Rangers for Chris Davis and Tommy Hunter. In 2017, the Orioles traded Yovani Gallardo to the Mariners for Seth Smith.

None of those three are likely to command anything in return come July. And any return we do get will undoubtedly be lessened by the front office’s unwillingness to eat salaries when trading players. The front office knows this, regardless of what they might say in public. The only reason for these signings is because these players may be marginally better than the younger Kevin Long Jersey , less experienced players whose positions they are taking up on the bench (Starling and Arteage, along with a few others). These players may allow the Royals to only lose 98 games instead of 100, and thus, the front office hopes, see a few thousand more fans coming to games throughout the season. The sad fact is, like last year, the Royals front office are missing the forest for the trees. The fastest way to get more people out to the games to watch is to field either a winning team, or a young team with lots of potential. There are still 11 teams with a younger roster, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, and yet the Royals are not winning games. I know I don’t want to watch Lucas Duda or Chris Owings hit.Hamilton has been somewhat fun to watch, but his empty average (hitting .286 with a 69 wRC+) doesn’t do much to inspire hope. It’s time for the Royals to be rid of aging veterans and have younger, untested, unproven players take their place. The team will likely lose a few more games (though what is the real difference between 95 and 100 losses?) but at least we as fans would have a reason to watch. And after posting the lowest attendance numbers since 2010, hopefully the front office will come to realize they need a different philosophy and embrace the rebuild.Because 2014 and 2015 were a hell of a lot of fun, and the quicker we get back to contending, the better for everyone. SAN DIEGO (AP) — s had some people wondering what was going on with the Colorado Rockies.Just as quickly http://www.stlouiscardina...ll-ozuna-jersey , consecutive wins have the Rockies feeling pretty good about themselves.“We feel as though we’re a contending team,” manager Bud Black said after the Rockies beat the last-place Padres 7-3 Sunday to salvage a split of a four-game series. “We feel as though we can play with anybody in the National League. We’ll see how these next few weeks go. This is good stuff. This is where we want to be. We know we’re in a dogfight with the Diamondbacks and Dodgers. We’ve just got to keep doing it.”About an hour after the Rockies won, Los Angeles beat Arizona 3-2. The Dodgers have a one-half game lead over Colorado, with the Diamondbacks another half game back in third.Chris Iannetta hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the seventh inning for the Rockies, who came into the series one-half game behind Arizona before losing the first two games. They snapped San Diego’s four-game winning streak on Saturday night and then beat rookie Jacob Nix (2-3) on Sunday.Colorado, which lost to Arizona in the NL wild-card game last year, won for the third time in seven games. With the score tied at 3, Nix faltered opening the seventh by allowing a leadoff single to Ian Desmond and walking Gerardo Parra before being lifted for fellow rookie Trey Wingenter. Desmond and Parra pulled off a double steal and Iannetta brought them both in with a double to the base of the fence in center. The double steal “takes the double play out of order, gives them a base open and they’ve got to pitch to you,” Iannetta said. “He made a mistake over the plate and I was able to get the barrel to it. I was just trying to hit a ball to the outfield and score one, and was able to hit a line drive and score two.”Charlie Blackmon singled with one out to bring in Iannetta. That made a winner of Kyle Freeland (13-7) Carlos Martinez Jersey , who allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings. He struck out three and walked two.The Rockies return home for a 10-game homestand that starts with three games against San Francisco and finishes with three against the Dodgers and four against Arizona.“Splitting the series certainly wasn’t what we were hoping for but we’ll take it,” Freeland said. The seventh inning “was huge,” the lefty added. “They were obviously seeing me pretty well and barreling-up balls. To get through six and then have the offense explode there in the seventh inning and throw some runs on them and kind of step on their throats, that was really great to see.”David Dahl homered in the eighth, his eighth. The double steal was big for the Rockies.“The Rockies have never historically really run on us,” San Diego manager Andy Green said. “They ran all over us this series. It’s a bunch of young guys on the mound that have come up not realizing how important that is. We’ve got to drill that into them that those are free bases, and they turn into runs, and they turn into losses.”Nix allowed five runs and five hits in six-plus innings, struck out four and walked two.“I take pride in not walking guys. Nothing frustrates me more than walking a guy and having him score,” Nix said. “Especially like if I ever walk a guy and he steals second then I give up a double, it’s like, that guy shouldn’t have been on base.“The ball that Story hit Lance Lynn Jersey , I put that ball right where I wanted. About six inches off the plate, wanted him to chase. He did, got it down the line. Good hitters get hits sometimes.”Freeland got into early trouble when he walked leadoff batter Freddy Galvis and allowed a single to left by rookie Luis Urias. He walked Eric Hosmer with one out and then allowed rookie Franmil Reyes’ two-run single to center for a 2-1 lead.Colorado got a sacrifice fly from Nolan Arenado in the first and a sac fly from Dahl in the fourth, and then tied the game in the sixth when DJ LeMahieu walked with one out and scored on Trevor Story’s double to right.UP NEXTRockies: LHP Tyler Anderson (6-7, 4.79) is scheduled to start Monday in the opener of a three-game series against San Francisco. The Giants will counter with LHP Madison Bumgarner (5-5, 2.68).Padres: RHP Bryan Mitchell (0-3, 7.08) is scheduled to start Monday night in the opener of a two-game series at Arizona, marking his return to the rotation for the first time since early May. He was moved to the bullpen after struggling in his first seven starts and then missed 2 ½ months with an elbow impingement. Arizona is set to counter with RHP Zack Godley (14-7, 4.42). ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — First baseman Justin Bour and the Angels have finalized a $2.5 million, one-year contract, giving Los Angeles depth while Albert Pujols recovers from surgery.Bour can earn an additional $500 Mark McGwire Jersey ,000 in performance bonuses based on plate appearances under the deal announced Saturday: $125,000 each for 350, 400, 450 and 500.The 30-year-old hit 20 homers and drove in 59 runs with the Marlins and Phillies last season. He played 112 of his 141 games with Miami before an August trade to Philadelphia.Bour didn’t find a regular spot with Philadelphia down the stretch. The Phillies wouldn’t have a spot for him this year, either, after moving Rhys Hoskins back to first base and signing corner outfielder Andrew McCutchen to a $50 million, three-year contract during the winter meetings.Bour batted .227, missing time late with an oblique strain. He’s hit 83 home runs over the last four years. He earned $3.4 million last season after beating Miami in salary arbitration, and then became a free agent last month when Philadelphia didn’t offer a 2019 contract.Pujols, who turns 39 next month, is working back from surgery on his left knee and right elbow and hasn’t yet swung a bat. He had season-ending knee surgery in August followed by the elbow procedure in September to remove bone spurs. He’s likely to see more games at designated hitter while two-way star Shohei Ohtani recovers from Tommy John surgery.

PHOENIX (AP) — p a big lead late Bob Uecker Jersey , costing Pedro Avila a victory in his major league debut. That they managed to win anyway is a testament to how this surprising season has gone so far.Manuel Margot hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning and the Padres bounced back after blowing a five-run cushion to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6 on Thursday night.“You give up a five-run lead and Margot gets a big hit, just another guy coming off the bench doing huge things for us,” manager Andy Green said. “That’s just a great win.”Avila was impressive in his debut, scratching through a shaky first inning to allow a run and four hits while striking out five in 5 1/3 innings.Franmil Reyes hit a solo homer off Zack Godley in the fourth and Austin Hedges capped a five-run sixth with a three-run shot to put San Diego up 6-1.But the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead.Arizona loaded the bases against Robert Stock in the seventh, scoring two runs on David Peralta’s single. Brad Wieck entered and Eduardo Escobar hit a three-run homer off the top of the left field wall to tie it 6-all.Archie Bradley (0-1) struck out the first two batters in the eighth before Margot hit his first homer of the season out to left.“It was one pitch that got away,” Bradley said. “That is the role we’re in on the back end there. You just can’t let that happen.”Green didn’t want to dig deep into his bullpen, but was forced to after Avila came out.Craig Stammen (1-0) allowed a hit before closing out the seventh inning and Trey Wingenter, giving Kirby Yates a rest, walked two in the ninth before striking out Nick Ahmed for his first career save. The Padres have won six of eight to move into first place in the NL West. The Diamondbacks went 3 for 11 with runners in scoring position and let a chance to win slip away on one pitch out over the plate.“I thought the way we fought back and knocked down five runs was a perfect remedy for us to win the ballgame,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t have that shutdown inning.”The Padres optioned left-hander Robbie Erlin to Class A Lake Elsinore, clearing room for Avila to become the third San Diego pitcher to make his big league debut in the season’s first 14 games. Nick Margevicius and Chris Paddack each debuted against San Francisco.Avila had never made an appearance above Class A before this season and made one start at Double-A Amarillo before being called up. The 22-year-old right-hander got off to a rocky start, giving up three hits and a walk in the opening inning. He escaped by allowing just one run, on Adam Jones’ single Tyler Flowers Jersey , and retired the next 12 batters he faced.Avila was lifted after hitting a batter with a pitch and walking another in the sixth.“At the beginning I was feeling a little bit anxious, little shaken out there,” Avila said through a translator. “In the end, it was a fantastic experience.”Godley gave up six runs on six hits and struck out eight in six innings.SLICK TATISPadres rookie shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. showed why he’s such a touted prospect in the second inning, diving up the middle to rob Caleb Joseph of a hit. Tatis also went 2 for 3 with an RBI.NUMBERSArizona’s pitching staff has at least 10 strikeouts in four consecutive games. … Each of the past four Padres starters making his major league debut — including Jacob Nix last season — has pitched at least five innings and allowed a run or less. … Peralta was 2 for 5 and has 22 hits, a team record through 13 games. The previous mark of 21 was set by Orlando Hudson in 2007. … Reyes has three homers in eight at-bats against Godley and is 4 for 26 against all other Arizona pitchers.TRAINER’S ROOMDiamondbacks: RHP Taijuan Walker will throw a bullpen Friday in his rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery.UP NEXTPadres: Paddack (0-0, 1.04 ERA) has 11 strikeouts through two big league starts after splitting last season between Class A and Double-A.Diamondbacks: RHP Luke Weaver (0-0, 6.75) will make his third start for Arizona since arriving from St. Louis as part of the Paul Goldschmidt trade. Weaver bounced back from a shaky Diamondbacks debut by allowing three runs in five innings of a 5-4 win over Boston. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Jake Bauers spoiled the Oakland Athletics‘ chance to close some ground on the AL wild card-leading New York Yankees.Bauers hit a three-run homer off Jeurys Familia in the eighth inning to help the Tampa Bay Rays slow the playoff-chasing Athletics with a 7-5 win Saturday night.Oakland remains 1 1/2 games behind the Yankees for the top AL wild card after New York lost to Toronto earlier in the day. The A’s, who have dropped two of three since winning six straight, fell 3 1/2 games behind Houston in the AL West.Bauers’ homer was just the second allowed by Familia (4-2) since he was acquired by Oakland on July 21 from the Mets.It came a few minutes after Oakland manager Bob Melvin was ejected by home plate umpire Larry Vanover for arguing a third-strike call on Marcus Semien in the top of the eighth.Bauers, who busted a 4-for-65 slump with three hits and four RBIs, celebrated his 11th homer with a big flip of the bat.“It’s nothing to do with disrespect or showing people up or anything like that. It’s just purely letting a lot of pent up emotions out,” he said. “The homer felt great http://www.bravesfanprosh...markakis-jersey , the bat flip felt better.”Andrew Kittredge (2-2) retired Mark Canha with the bases loaded in the eighth to preserve a 4-4 tie and win a game in which both teams used relievers as openers. Tampa Bay and Oakland have been at the forefront of that trend this season.“Oakland’s playing for an awful lot right now,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “Every game, they put themselves in a situation where they’re playing for a wild card home field. They’ve been on a nice run. It makes all the sense in the world how aggressive they’re being.”Sergio Romo got his 20th save despite giving up a homer to Matt Chapman in the ninth. It was Chapman’s 23rd homer.Oakland’s big chance came in the eighth. Before Canha grounded out, Semien was called out on strikes with the bases loaded.“I mean, everyone sees the box,” Semien said. “I looked at the box on the computer and it was not in the strike zone. That’s the facts. That’s what I saw on our computer.”Melvin, who was ejected for the second time this season, saw it, too.“The closer we get to the end, the more emotional we’re going to be,” he said. “He’s trying to grind through that at-bat and drive in the go-ahead run, and you feel like he gets a (strike) call that’s not a strike. … It happens.”Brandon Lowe hit a two-run homer in the second to put Tampa Bay ahead, and Jed Lowrie made it 2-1 in the third with a single off Yonny Chirinos. Chirinos then retired 10 in a row before Matt Olson tied it in the sixth with his 27th home run.Kevin Kiermaier hit an RBI triple and scored on Bauers’ sacrifice fly for a 4-2 lead in the sixth, but Canha’s pinch-hit double helped the A’s tie it at 4 in the seventh.Tommy Pham’s 17-game hitting streak came to an end for the Rays Phil Niekro Jersey , who have won 10 of 13.FOUR TEAMS WINNING 100 GAMES?With two weeks left in the season, the A’s, Astros and Yankees could join the Red Sox as 100-win teams. Never before have three teams from the same league — or four teams from both leagues — won 100 games in the same season.“There seems to be, at least in our league, more powerhouses this year than in the past, maybe a little less parity,” Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. “The only thing I would really take from that is that if you went into the season and looked at those (other) three teams that might win 100 games, you almost expected them to.”TRAINER’S ROOMAthletics: OF Chad Pinder was in the leadoff spot after stumbling over the bullpen mound while chasing a foul ball Friday night.Rays: Cash said Romo is fine after the reliever “dinged his knee up a little bit” while working a perfect ninth inning Friday night. … INF Daniel Robertson, rehabbing after season-ending left thumb surgery, resumed taking grounders at second base and shortstop.UP NEXTRHP Mike Fiers (5-0, 2.72 in seven starts since being acquired from Detroit) will pitch Sunday’s series finale for the A’s. RHP Diego Castillo, who started Friday night’s game for the Rays and pitched two innings, will start again Sunday.

a Cleveland Indiansuniform.Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported the 14-year veteran agreed to a minor league contract with the club Saturday. The Boston Red Sox designated Ramirez for assignment near the end of May to make room for 2008 American League MVP Dustin Pedroia. That ended the three-time All-Star's second stint with the team he debuted with in 2005 George Bell Jersey , as his most recent tenure came with high expectations after he signed a four-year, $88 million contract in November 2014.He sat out the remainder of the 2018 season. Meanwhile, the Red Sox set a franchise record with 108 regular-season wins en route a World Series title. After he underwentshoulder surgery in October 2017, the 35-year-old was hitting .254/.313/.395 with six home runs, seven doubles and 29 RBI in 44 games with the Red Sox. He started the season hitting .330 with three home runs, five doubles and 17 RBI through April but slumped through May with a .163 average and just five extra-base hits.Clevelandhas to be intrigued by some of Ramirez's splits. Five of his six home runs in 2018 came off right-handers, but he hit .333 against southpaws and .230 against righties. Not only that, but he also came up big in clutch situations. While hitting just .217 with the bases empty, he hit .294 with men on, .340 with runners in scoring position and .286 with runners in scoring position and two outs.He may no longer be the MVP candidate he once was, but he still has the ability to make an impact with his bat. He is Dave Winfield Jersey , however, limited in the field. Despite having played shortstop, third base and left field throughout his career, he has not played anything other than first base or DH in the last three seasons.Ramirez hasn't faced big league pitching since May, so he may need time to get his bat going. If Clevelandgives him at-bats, he may prove he can still be a difference-maker. NEW YORK (AP) — Looking for a big start, the New York Yankees found an unorthodox spot for Aaron Judge in his long-awaited return to the lineup. After missing two months with a left oblique injury, Judge was back Friday night against Houston and batted leadoff for the first time in his major league career.“I loved it. More at-bats. That’s the best part about it,” Judge said after going 0 for 4 with two strikeouts in a 4-1 victory. “Every time I came up it felt like there was somebody on base somewhere, so it’s a good little spot. Hope it was not my last time doing it.”Normally the team’s No. 2 hitter, the 6-foot-7 Jack Morris Jersey , 282-pound slugger was moved to the top spot as manager Aaron Boone toys with how best to arrange his power-packed batting order. Regular leadoff man DJ LeMahieu was rested.“I’m just trying to get my best players up there as much as possible,” Boone said.Judge received a boisterous ovation from the Yankee Stadium crowd when No. 99 was introduced with a “Welcome back!” from public address announcer Paul Olden. Judge ran the count full his first time up before grounding out to first base against right-hander Brad Peacock.“Good to be back,” Judge said. “Just glad to be doing what I love again.”“No rust. I didn’t skip a beat because mentally, sitting on the sidelines, I was watching every single game — even if I wasn’t here,” he added. “I was trying to visualize at-bats just so when I came back, I didn’t skip a beat.”Astros manager AJ Hinch deadpanned that Judge is the largest leadoff hitter he’ll ever manage against.“He brings an immediate threat from the first pitch of the game,” Hinch said. “So, it’s a different look.”Along with his prodigious power, Judge has a sharp eye at the plate. The right fielder batted leadoff in spring training last year as the Yankees explored the idea, but he’d never started there in a regular-season game until Friday.Back in March 2018 http://www.bluejaysfanpro...anderson-jersey , Judge said high school might have been the last time he hit leadoff but it was “no big deal” and “something we can do in the season.”“Just having him in the lineup is different. He brings a presence,” Yankees center fielder Aaron Hicks said. “That can be one of the best leadoff hitters of all-time.”Gary Sánchez batted second for New York ahead of lefty-swinging Didi Gregorius and cleanup man Giancarlo Stanton. Edwin Encarnación was fifth in front of lefty Brett Gardner, Gleyber Torres, Gio Urshela and Cameron Maybin.Hicks was out of the starting lineup with a sore right shoulder. In addition to LeMahieu, first baseman Luke Voit also was rested.Hicks entered on defense in the fourth inning after Maybin exited with a strained left calf. He was scheduled for an MRI and is headed to the injured list.“It’ll be a while,” Boone said.Maybin appeared to get hurt diving back to first on a pickoff attempt.Encarnación, who played first base, was acquired last weekend in a trade with Seattle.“Obviously we gave Luke and DJ the day today, so a little different construction and I just felt it made the most sense,” Boone said. “And with Hicks down, I thought it was the right spot for (Judge) today.”The 27-year-old Judge was batting .288 with five homers and 11 RBIs when he strained his left oblique on a swing April 20. New York went 37-17 without him despite missing several other injured stars during that stretch as well Aaron Loup Jersey , such as Stanton and Gregorius.Judge, the 2017 AL Rookie of the Year, was reinstated from the injured list before the game. He went 2 for 16 with a homer during a five-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre that wrapped up Wednesday.“To have him back now is good, and exciting for all of us,” Boone said. The AL East-leading Yankees have won seven straight to move a season-high 21 games over .500 at 48-27.“They’re getting healthy,” Hinch said. “When you can add a guy like Judge to their lineup that was already doing pretty good things offensively, that’s dangerous for their opponents.”

ANAHEIM http://www.diamondbacksfa...-greinke-jersey , Calif. (AP) — Tommy La Stella is providing an unexpected power boost for the nst the Milwaukee Brewers. The second baseman homered twice and drove in four runs to lead the Angels to an 11-8 victory Tuesday night after Mike Trout exited with a groin injury.La Stella, who had only one other multihomer game, has gone deep in consecutive games for the first time in his career. It’s just the second time in La Stella’s six major league seasons that he’s had three or more homers in a year.“It feels nice. It reminds me of Little League a little bit. It’s a good feeling any time you get into a ball like that,” he said.Andrelton Simmons had three hits as Los Angeles extended its win streak to five games. Jonathan Lucroy added two hits and three RBIs against his first major league team.Trout left in the fourth inning after he strained his right groin while running to second base in the second. The Angels said their $426.5 million center fielder is day-to-day.La Stella’s three-run homer off Freddy Peralta in the first inning gave the Angels a 6-0 lead. The Brewers drew within a run in the fourth before La Stella led off the bottom half with a drive to center. The 412-foot shot was the longest of his career.“I caught them right and on the barrel pretty well,” La Stella said. “I’ve been freeing up my hands at the plate and not muscling the swing. That allows the power to generate itself.”Angels manager Brad Ausmus said La Stella got off to a slow start but has turned the corner in this series.“I don’t know if I would have pegged him for the second-most home runs at this point in the season but I’m glad he had two tonight because they were important,” Ausmus said.Los Angeles went ahead to stay when Alex Wilson walked Lucroy with the bases loaded in the seventh. Alex Claudio (0-1), who walked Lucroy to start the seventh, took the loss.Yasmani Grandal homered twice and drove in three runs for Milwaukee. Lorenzo Cain and Ben Gamel each had two hits, and Mike Moustakas went deep for the second straight night.Moustakas and Grandal hit consecutive homers in the fifth to give the Brewers an 8-7 lead.“We made a great comeback and gave ourselves a chance for a couple innings. A couple leadoff walks hurt us tonight,” manager Craig Counsell said. “They did a good job of putting some pressure on us.”Peralta, who threw eight shutout innings and struck out a career-high 11 in his last start Andrew Chafin Jersey , had one of the poorest outings of his career. The right-hander allowed a career-high eight hits and tied a career worst by giving up seven runs in 3 1/3 innings.Matt Harvey struggled in his second consecutive home outing. The right-hander allowed six runs in 4 1/3 innings. He has a 15.13 ERA at Angels Stadium.UMPIRE ADJUSTMENTPlate umpire Tom Hallion took a foul ball hit by Simmons off the mask in the second and was looked at by an Angels trainer. Hallion remained behind the plate but left between innings. Second base umpire Todd Tichenor went behind the plate to finish the game. The Angels said Hallion was still experiencing headaches and will be evaluated before Wednesday’s game.TRAINER’S ROOMBrewers: RHP Jimmy Nelson (right shoulder) threw two innings during an extended spring training game. Counsell said Nelson is likely to throw again in a couple of days before a determination is made on his next step.Angels: LHP Andrew Heaney threw for the first time since experiencing soreness in his left elbow at the end of spring training. Heaney received a cortisone shot last week and is unlikely to rejoin the rotation until next month.UP NEXTFelix Pena (0-1, 5.40 ERA) will make his second start at home as the Angels finish a seven-game homestand. The right-hander struck out seven and allowed one earned run in 4 2/3 innings Friday against Texas. The Brewers will send Brandon Woodruff (1-0, 6.00) to the mound for his first start against the Angels. DETROIT (AP) — Free agent Josh Harrison has agreed to a one-year deal with the Detroit Tigers, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the deal was still subject to a successful physical. The 31-year-old Harrison spent his first eight major league seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He’s played second base, third base, shortstop and in the outfield.Harrison did not have a great 2018 at the plate Alex Avila Jersey , hitting .250 with eight home runs and 37 RBIs. He missed time early in the season with a hand injury and ended up playing just 97 games. The Tigers could end up replicating Pittsburgh’s up-the-middle-combination of Harrison and shortstop Jordy Mercer, who signed with Detroit earlier in the offseason .Harrison hit a career-high 16 home runs in 2017, and he batted .315 in 2014, but he’s never played more than 143 games in a season. If he plays well for Detroit, the rebuilding Tigers may be able to trade him for a prospect or two.

WEST PALM BEACH Aaron Loup Jersey , Fla. (AP) — rom baseball. Shutouts are vanishing, too.The numbers are striking.Go back to 1978, and there were more than 1,000 complete games in the majors. Move to 2003, and the total was about 200. In 2018, though, there were only 42 — the lowest total in the sport’s history, according to Baseball-Reference .com — and just 19 of those were shutouts, the fewest since the 1870s.Or to put it a different way: Roughly every other game featured a starter who went the distance 40 years ago, whereas about one in every 55 games did last season. Stars of the 1960s and ’70s such as Bob Gibson, Steve Carlton or Jim Palmer would top 20 complete games in a year. In the ’90s, Pedro Martinez, Greg Maddux and Randy Johnson would get to 10 or 12 or so.Last year, no one threw more than two complete games. No one delivered more than one shutout.“The special, elite guys are still able to achieve it and want to achieve it,” Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said. “I don’t think we’ll ever see it disappear completely Matt Adams Jersey , but it’s definitely becoming a rarity.”So what happened? Various factors contributed to the decline of dominant, nine-inning performances on the mound, from injury fears to an increased emphasis on accumulating bullpen arms, from the newfangled “opener” strategy of using a reliever to get things underway to protecting young pitchers in such a way that they never build up an ability to stay in until the end of games.Still, the basic sense around the sport is that it’s not that pitchers are no longer born with shoulders or elbows capable of producing complete games, but that their teams simply won’t let them even try and generally don’t properly prepare them to do so.“Everyone,” Atlanta Braves right-hander Kevin Gausman summed up, “is obsessed with pitch count now.”It’s a trend that seemed to gain steam in the 2000s, not coincidentally as more and more pitchers were getting elbow injuries that required Tommy John surgery.Don’t let most guys throw too hard for too long, the thinking goes.“There’s a general pullback in the industry, because they couldn’t comprehend why so many people were getting hurt. The biggest mass effect you can have is workload,” Houston Astros righty Gerrit Cole said. “Just overall, clubs are kind of doing a risk analysis. … They are trying to be smarter about it and disburse the load a little bit to some other guys.”Merely six starters averaged at least 100 pitches per outing last season, down from 43 in 2011, per TeamRankings.com.Cole was a member of that group in 2018, which also included his teammate Justin Verlander Kevin Long Jersey , NL Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom of the New York Mets, and three-time Cy Young recipient Max Scherzer of the Nationals.“They’re really holding starters down to 100 pitches and not letting you go past that. If you do, maybe you get 110. But you rarely see guys get to 120 anymore,” Scherzer said. “If an inning takes 15 pitches, you get to 105 after seven and that’s about all you get. The data shows that once you get past 105, 110, that’s when you do start losing your effectiveness, no matter how good of a starter you are.”In this age of hard-throwing relievers and lefty specialists, a team would rather have someone fresh pitch than a player laboring for hours.“Everybody’s coming in throwing gas. Are you really that much better than those guys down there at that point in time?” Scherzer said. “That’s where you have to be honest with yourself and your manager and say, ‘I’ve given everything I’ve got over these 105, 110 pitches.’ The decision becomes pretty easy for the manager to say, ‘I’m going to go to one of my wipeout bullpen guys.'”Scherzer has been known to lobby to remain in at key late-game moments. He’s as competitive as they come. Yet he says he grasped early in his career that all that truly matters is that his team wins — not how it happens. His initial complete game arrived in his 179th big league start; he has 10 over the past five seasons.“There were opportunities where I could have pitched one sooner. But it didn’t matter. I could have gone back out there, but we’re winning by 10 or 11 runs, so why go pitch the ninth? So I can say that I did it? No, then I’m hurting the team. It would be a selfish accomplishment,” Scherzer said. “There’s times where if you can get a rest http://www.nationalsfanpr...tt-adams-jersey , take it. You’re actually helping the team more by not doing it.”He also pointed to another element: the score.“The sweet spot to throw a complete game now is being up three or four runs,” Scherzer said. “That’s the only time where it makes sense to think, ‘We still need our best guy in there, and it’s not a save situation.'”As with everything in professional sports these days, it’s all about what the numbers dictate. And there are calculations connected to saving up strength for the postseason, too; if NBA players sit out entire regular-season games for “load management,” why shouldn’t a pitcher head to the clubhouse a little early?Bullpens are built to get the last six or nine outs, and it’s OK for a starter to become conditioned to go six or seven innings. That starts happening in the minors, when pitchers are pulled as soon as they show signs of fatigue.By the time they get to the majors, they’re not used to working through that.“We have a way of trying to evolve as an industry that’s taken out a little bit of the ‘machismo’ that goes with the complete game,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. “I’m not sure if that’s good or bad, but it’s part of the evolution of analytics being applied at a higher rate across the board.” Happy New Year! CLEVELAND —ive divisions three years in a row will meet Saturday night at Progressive Field for the second game of a three-game series that could be a potential preview of a postseason series. The 105-win Boston Red Sox Austin Romine Jersey , the American League East champions, will face the 85-win Cleveland Indians, the AL Central champs. The two teams split a four-game series in Boston last month. Boston beat Cleveland 7-5 on Friday night, the Red Sox’s 105th win of the season, tying the franchise record set in 1912.Saturday’s pitching matchup will be two right-handers, Boston’s Rick Porcello vs. Cleveland’s Mike Clevinger.Article continues below ...Porcello (17-7, 4.30 ERA) is coming off a 5-3 win over the New York Mets in his last start, on Sept. 15. In that game, Porcello pitched five innings, giving up three runs and two hits with five strikeouts and one walk.Porcello’s last start against Cleveland came Aug. 20. The Red Sox lost that game and Porcello took the loss, pitching seven innings and allowing five runs and six hits, with six strikeouts and one walk. In his career against the Indians, Porcello has made 23 starts and is 10-5 with a 3.51 ERA.Clevinger is on a late-season roll. In his last eight starts, he is 5-1 with a 1.85 ERA while holding opposing hitters to a .189 batting average. Those numbers include his last start, a 15-0 win over Detroit on Sept. 15. Clevinger pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, with five strikeouts and three walks.Clevinger last faced Boston on Aug. 21, 2017 http://www.yankeesfanpros...-stanton-jersey , when he got no decision in a 5-4 Cleveland victory. He pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up four runs and four hits, with four strikeouts, four walks and two home runs allowed.Boston is not one of Clevinger’s preferred opponents. In two starts against the Red Sox last year, his only two career appearances against Boston, he was 0-1 with an 11.05 ERA. In 7 1/3 innings in those two starts, he gave up nine runs, 11 hits and eight walks. One of the hitters in Boston’s potent lineup that Clevinger will have to pay particular attention to is MVP candidate J.D. Martinez, who in his four years with the Detroit Tigers, wore out Cleveland pitching. Martinez is a career .308 hitter vs. Cleveland, and he has more home runs (18) and RBIs (54) against the Indians than against any other opponent in the major leagues. This year, Martinez is having a career year. He leads the league in RBIs (124) and is second in the AL in hitting (.330) and second in home runs (41).“Unless you make your pitches to him, he can do some damage,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “He can pull it with power, hit it the other way with power. He’s taken things to another level this year. He’s really dangerous.”A key hitter for the Indians is third baseman Josh Donaldson, who was acquired in a trade with Toronto on Aug. 31, and is trying to get up to speed after spending most of the 2018 season on the disabled list with a strained calf.Donaldson was used as the designated hitter Friday night, and Francona said he will start at third base on Saturday and Sunday Bernie Williams Jersey , the first time since joining Cleveland that Donaldson has played three games in a row.“He’s gotten himself in great shape, and it’s paying off,” Francona said. “We’re trying to play him enough without playing too much.” Brock Holt had the best year of his career in 2018, but how sustainable was it?"There are a number of things that stand out here, and that Holt had a clear head for the first time in a couple years was certainly the biggest factor in his performance ticking back up. That being said, while every area of his game got a little better, the part that looked most like his old self was on balls in play. Holt had always had a perception of luck around him back in 2014 and 2015, as he posted batting averages on balls in play of .349 and .350 in those seasons. Those are Joey Votto and Mike Trout numbers, not Brock Holt numbers. It seemed nearly impossible that he’d be able to sustain that, even after doing it two years in a row. His BABIP then dropped below .300 in both 2016 and 2017, and our suspicions were confirmed. At least we though. Last year, the now-healthy Holt looked a lot more like his old self who burst onto the scene, finishing the year with a .337 BABIP.The question is, did we see another year filled with good fortune for Holt? Or can we accept now that Holt is a well above-average BABIP hitter with 2016 and 2017 being the outliers. The fact that those two years have the injury excuse certainly play in their favor, but we should probably look at the batted ball data, too. There, things do look Holt and confirm the eye test where Holt looked similar to his old self. Most notable was his line drive rate (per Fangraphs), which sat at a career-high 24 percent. For context C.C. Sabathia Jersey , that put him in the top quarter of the league in that category. Holt also combined the line drives with a career-high hard-hit rate, though even his career-high rate of 29 percent was in the back-half of the league. Oddly enough, he also had the highest infield fly ball rate of his career, which is usually an indicator of bad contact. Throw in a more pull-happy approach than usual, it is a little strange that he was able to post such a high BABIP. David Butler II-USA TODAY SportsWhat plays into his favor is simply the kind of batted balls he hits, keeping the ball low to the ground. Line drives obviously lead to the highest BABIP, but fly balls lead to the lowest, particularly for hitters without much raw power like Holt. According to Fangraphs’ batted ball data, Holt had the 14th-lowest fly ball rate among the 278 hitters with at least 300 plate appearances in 2018. I’m not sure Holt is a true-talent .337-BABIP hitter, but it’s not unreasonable to expect him to stabilize somewhere around .310-.320.The good news for Holt is that, while the BABIP saw a big jump this year, he’s also shown improvement in other areas as well. After carrying below-average walk rates for most of his career, his walk rate has jumped to double digits in each of the last two years. He also showed career-best power in 2018, though that didn’t look super sustainable. Still, combine all of that, and even with a little big of a step back on balls in play you’re still looking at a league-average hitter. That’s combined with a player who can still play all over the field (though probably not as well as when he first came up) and is likely the most liked and important player in the clubhouse. Seems like a useful player to have on your roster.

FORT MYERS Zach Duke Jersey , Fla. (AP) — have gone much better — even if it lasted just one inning.Pedroia cleanly fielded a two-out grounder by Minnesota’s Jake Cave, then singled off Kohl Stewart leading off the bottom half of Boston’s 12-1 loss Thursday.“It made me happy to run around the bases,” Pedroia said. “It was really fun out there.”A four-time All-Star and the 2008 AL MVP, Pedroia’s knee problems began with a spikes-up takeout slide at second by Baltimore’s Manny Machado on April 21, 2017. Pedroia went on the disabled list three times that season, twice because of knee inflammation, and had left knee surgery that Oct. 25.He played in five injury rehabilitation games at Triple-A Pawtucket last May 14-24, appeared in three games for the Red Sox from May 26-29, then went back on the disabled list for the rest of the season.“I just need to keep building on this. I hadn’t seen a pitch since May 29. Everything went well,” Pedroia said.Pedroia, 35 and a veteran of 13 major league seasons, was restless Wednesday night.“I rolled around the bed a lot,” he said. “The adrenaline was OK. I was taking it in stride.”Pedroia moved around the infield as part of Boston’s defensive shifts, going across to the shortstop position when right-handed hitters were at the plate.“That wasn’t a problem. We practice it every day,” he said. “And besides http://www.twinsfanprosho...x-kepler-jersey , I was always a shortstop before coming up here.” SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Aside from that fearsome left-handed swing everybody knew, Willie McCovey provided an example of humility in how he lived for many of his San Francisco Giants teammates year after year.“McCovey was our leader,” Gaylord Perry said as his fellow Hall of Famer was remembered in a celebration of his life Thursday at AT&T Park.McCovey died Oct. 31 at age 80 after suffering from ongoing health issues.Hall of Famers, former teammates and winners of the Willie Mac Award named for him attended on a picture-perfect day. McCovey’s 44 was written into the infield dirt next to his position at first base. The San Francisco Fire Department paid tribute with a spraying show from a boat in his namesake McCovey Cove in the bay beyond the right-field arcade. Bouquets of flowers were left on McCovey’s statue across the water.A first baseman and left fielder who won NL Rookie of the Year in 1959 and MVP 10 years later, McCovey was a .270 career hitter with 521 home runs and 1,555 RBIs in 22 major league seasons, 19 of them with the Giants. He also played for the Athletics and Padres.“What he did on the field, everybody knows what he did,” Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda said. “But as a human being, Willie McCovey was very special.”McCovey wore No. 44 to honor Hank Aaron — who like McCovey grew up in Mobile, Alabama.“If there is a second life, I’d like to come back as a major league baseball player,” McCovey once said.“Stretch,” as he was fondly known, never won a World Series after coming so close. The Giants lost the 1962 World Series to the New York Yankees Fernando Rodney Jersey , dropping Game 7 1-0 when McCovey lined out to second baseman Bobby Richardson with runners on second and third for the final out.“Willie’s indelible moment happened to be a screaming line drive that found Bobby Richardson’s glove in Game 7 of the 1962 World Series,” Giants CEO Larry Baer said. “A few feet one way or another, people say, and Willie’s legacy rises to a whole different level. Well, I couldn’t disagree with that more. Even if that line drive had gotten past Bobby Richardson and driven in the winning run, that one heroic moment would never have defined Willie’s legacy. His legacy transcends baseball, transcends his six All-Star appearances, his Rookie of the Year award, his MVP, even his Hall of Fame induction.”McCovey was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1986 after his first time on the ballot. Those who played with him cherished McCovey for his thoughtful ways both on and off the field. Home run king Barry Bonds called him “Uncle Mac” ”because I’ve always admired him and he’s always taught me the game of baseball as much as Willie (Mays) and my dad have,” Bonds said Thursday.“I got to know Willie Mac the man,” said Felipe Alou, who was roommates with McCovey in the majors, minors and even winter ball in the Dominican Republic. “We came here in 1958 a bunch of kids. Willie obviously came up in ’59, another child http://www.twinsfanprosho...x-kepler-jersey , another kid. I have been a very privileged person, I got to play with five Hall of Famer players with the Giants.”Past Willie Mac Award winners in attendance included Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow, Dave Dravecky, Buster Posey, Jack Clark, Shawon Dunston, Nick Hundley, Marvin Benard and Mike Felder. The honor is voted on by the players, coaches and training staff to recognize the Giants player who most exemplifies McCovey’s inspirational ways on the field and in the clubhouse.“I have never been around a more humble man and I’ve never been around someone who lifted up others around him more than himself,” Dravecky said. “I’ve never been around a man who loved so deeply and cared so much about wearing the Giants uniform. For Willie, he showed us the way.”

Indians Among Teams Interested in Brad HandBrad Hand is in a similar situation to a year ago, as buzz is circulating around a potential exit from the San Diego Padres after he appeared in the All-Star Game. The 28-year-old is a valuable commodity to teams in need of bullpen help because he is a left-handed reliever. The market for Hand should continue to grow in the coming days and weeks, and the Cleveland Indians could be one team in the mix for him, as ESPN's Jerry Crasnick noted:Jerry Crasnick jcrasnickAdd the #Indians to list of teams with interest in #Padres closer Brad Hand. Hes signed for $6.5M and $7M the next two years, with a $10M club option for 2021. So he could be a nice hedge against Andrew Miller and Cody Allen leaving through free agency. Price very high, though. However, Hand's potential suitors might be turned away by his cost, as he is set to earn $6.5 million and $7 million in the next two seasons. In addition to the Indians, the New York Yankees might be involved in the Hand sweepstakes, as they've checked in on Hand and teammate Tyson Ross, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post.Hand has 24 saves in 41 appearances for the Padres, who sit 14.5 games back of the Dodgers in the National League West.Lynne Sladky/Associated PressIn 54 duels against left-handed hitters, Hand conceded eight hits while striking out 26 batters and walking four.Since Hand is under contract for a few years, his situation could differ from other players on the market, as teams must be willing to take on his deal while giving up prospects to the Padres. However, if teams like the Indians and Yankees feel like it's the right move, Hand won't spend another August in San Diego.Talk Heating Up Around Zach BrittonWith the Orioles expected to offload Machado soon Felix Hernandez Jersey , their next order of business is to find a trade partner for Zach Britton, who, like Hand, remained with his current team despite heavy interest at the trade deadline 12 months ago.According to MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli, the interest in the 30-year-old reliever is gaining steam:Brittany Ghiroli Britt_GhiroliWhen Machado is officially traded, Orioles could move quickly on Britton. Interest in him has picked up steam. The market for Britton could be one of the largest in the majors, as Fancred's Jon Heyman noted a handful of teams are expected to pick up negotiations with the Orioles:Jon Heyman JonHeymanWhatever happens with manny (and dodgers lead), phillies are expected to pick up talks regarding Zach Britton. Big market there: cubs, yankees, red sox, maybe astros, indians, dodgers, others. The Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, Yankees and Indians could be among the potential suitors taking a swing at acquiring Britton.Philadelphia is in desperate need of bullpen reinforcements, as it looks to solidify its status on top of the NL East, and it must find a way to improve its roster after losing out on the Machado sweepstakes. The risk involved with trading for Britton is he's coming off an Achilles injury and appeared in 15 games so far this season. However, teams could see that as a plus, as the left-handed reliever is fresh with plenty of meaningful baseball left on the schedule.Since the Yankees, Red Sox, Indians and Cubs possess established closers and the Phillies are relying on a young bullpen, the NL East leader could throw more at the Orioles in an attempt to stave off the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals. Phillies in Pursuit of Upgrades Across the DiamondWith the bidding war for Machado not going the way they expected it to, the Phillies will be searching the market for potential additions to their lineup. As we mentioned above Hisashi Iwakuma Jersey , the Phillies are also in the market for pitching, and one of their options could be a former member of the team.Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher J.A. Happ, who recorded a save for the American League in the All-Star Game, sits behind Britton on the Phillies' wish list, but there is interest in him, per Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia.Michael Dwyer/Associated PressIn addition to the interest being there from the Phillies, the Blue Jays spent time scouting prospects in the Philadelphia farm system as part of their preparations for potential negotiations, per Salisbury. The 35-year-old, who started his career with the Phillies, is 10-6 with a 4.29 ERA and 121 strikeouts in 19 starts, and he'd be a perfect veteran addition to a rotation headlined by Aaron Nola and Jake Arrieta.Don't expect the Phillies to just hunt for upgrades to their pitching staff, as position players will be a priority as well, especially on the left side of the infield.According to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki, the Phillies are ready to turn their attention to Mike Moustakas, Eduardo Escobar and other hitters on the market. However, the only problem with a potential deal for one of the sluggers mentioned above is the Phillies would have to juggle their infield rotation, as Maikel Franco currently starts at third base. The move for Machado would've been ideal since he could've taken over for the underperforming players at shortstop.Although it might not be a perfect fit positionally, the Phillies need to bolster their roster, and if a trade for a third baseman comes about, they could always solve the problem by shifting Franco to shortstop.Follow Joe on Twitter, JTansey90.Statistics obtained from Baseball Reference.

ied in this case?"Royals fans have a love-hate relationship with projection systems. They love to hate them. This is particularly true of the PECOTA projections which are http://www.rockiesfanpros...d-bettis-jersey , funnily enough, named after - but in no other way related to - former Royals infielder Bill Pecota. In 2014 and 2015 PECOTA didn’t particularly like the Royals and the Royals completely blew the projections out of the water both years. For the record, PECOTA was quite generous to them last year with a 66 win projection. The Royals finished the year with a cool 58 Ws.But there are a lot of other projection systems out there. Perhaps one of the most famous (or infamous) is Dan Szymborksi’s ZiPS projections. They attempt to estimate a player’s stats and fWAR rather than team record but you can project out a record using them if you like. But even leaving record calculations out of it we’ve had some people ask how the projections compared to the final result and it sounded kind of fun so let’s check this out.If you add up all the zWAR of the projected position players, ignoring playing time, that played for the Royals last year you get a total of 12.3 zWAR. The final fWAR total of all Royals position players was 10.7 fWAR. That’s pretty close, all things considered. There were some pretty drastic differences, of course. Whit Merrifield, for example, was projected for 2.5 zWAR before collection 5.2 fWAR. Adalberto Mondesi was projected for 0.9 zWAR and collected 2.8 fWAR. There were some over-estimations, too. Salvador Perez was projected for 2.6 zWAR but injury and ineffectiveness reduced him to 1.7 fWAR in reality. Paulo Orlando was projected for 0.1 zWAR in 364 plate appearances but collected an amazing -1.0 fWAR in only 93. ZiPS generously suggest Alcides Escobar was worth 0.3 zWAR when in reality he was worth -0.3 fWAR. Others were pretty accurate. Alex Gordon was pegged for 1.4 zWAR and came up with 1.6 fWAR. Mike Moustakas was pegged for 2.5 zWAR in a full season and gave the Royals 1.7 fWAR in approximately two-thirds of a season. Drew Butera pulled in -0.1 zWAR and a very similar -0.3 fWAR. What about the pitching side, though? The projection systems failed us a bit on that side. The Royals projected out for 14.0 zWAR but attained a mere 5.1 fWAR. So what the heck happened? If you guessed that it starts with Blaine Boyer, Justin Grimm, and Brandon Maurer you guessed well.I couldn’t find projections for Boyer but Grimm nabbed a 0.4 zWAR while Maurer was thought to be able to achieve 0.6. Instead, those three went -0.9 Ryan McMahon Jersey , -0.5, and -0.8 fWAR respectively. Enny Romero was another guy I could find no projections for and despite only throwing four innings for the Royals he accounted for another -0.4 fWAR.It wasn’t all bad news for the Royals pitching staff, of course. Brad Keller pulled off a 2.5 fWAR campaign despite being projected for only 0.5 zWAR. He stands as the highest over-achiever. Jakob Junis came away with 1.3 fWAR compared to 0.8 fWAR. And Kelvin Herrera managed to hit his projected zWAR at 0.7 fWAR even before he was traded. The most accurate projections were probably Kevin McCarthy (0 zWAR, 0.2 fWAR) and Glenn Sparkman (0.2 zWAR, 0.1 fWAR in a little more than half of the projected innings.) Ian Kennedy was projected for 1.0 zWAR and put together a 0.8 fWAR campaign. Which just goes to show that the more major league experience these players have the more likely the projections are to be accurate. Which is exactly what you should expect from them. More data should always mean better accuracy in projections. So if you take the projected zWAR of this team and add it to the 0 WAR base (about 48 wins) you end up with ZiPS projecting the Royals would win approximately 74 games. Obviously, that’s even more inaccurate than PECOTA was this season so we should not use the system that way without putting in a bit more effort. I made no effort to re-calculate the numbers based on playing time or to fill in the gaps of the zWAR for players for whom I could not find projections. If you’re wondering how accurate that 48-win number is for a 0 WAR team the Royals should have won 64 games based on their team fWAR. However, Bill James invented a concept known as the Pythagorean W-L record which attempts to normalize out some of the luck inherent in a team’s season by calculating how many wins they should have had based on runs scored and allowed. The Royals’ Pythagorean record was 62-100 which is pretty dang close the number of wins you would have expected the Royals to have with their team fWAR. The temperature in Baltimore today may not exceed 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Stay warm, Orioles fans!"Hello, friends. There are now 66 days remaining until the next Orioles game. We’re also into the week of FanFest, at which there will be... uh, well, just about nothing to celebrate. GM Mike Elias has said a lot of exciting things since he got hired, but none of that excitement has been for 2019. That’s not likely to change before the season starts and it definitely won’t be happening by Saturday.Perhaps the Orioles will officially announce their coaching staff before FanFest and then introduce some or all of those guys at FanFest. It seems like it would be an easy way to generate at least a little bit of a headline for the team. They seem to have selected most of the coaches one by one and they just haven’t announced any of them. Maybe they don’t think the coaching staff is worth much of an announcement. It’s a mystery.Speaking of mysteries, the start of spring training is getting closer and closer and no one has signed Manny Machado or Bryce Harper. When do you think one or both of those free agent pursuits will come to a close? Where do you think they will end up at this point? It’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day here in America - the observance of the day B.J. Upton Jersey , since his birthday was January 15. Congress voted in 1983 to establish the holiday, observed for the first time in 1986. I have no profound original thoughts to offer about MLK. Thinking about everything he fought through to help achieve what he did, it’s just remarkable. He’s one of history’s great Americans. Think about him if you have today off, and even if you don’t.Around the blogO’sphereInbox: Will analytics help Chris Davis? They are: 1996 short-timer Keith Shepherd, 1973-75 reliever Bob Reynolds, and 1970/72 catcher and later manager Johnny Oates, who would have turned 73 years old today. Is today your birthday? This is recognized as the first American novel. In 1793, the French revolutionaries executed King Louis XVI by guillotine, having found him guilty of treason. In 1919, the Irish Republic declared independence. It claimed the whole of the island, but after the revolution, there was a division between the newly-recognized Republic of Ireland and the counties of Northern Ireland, which remained in the United Kingdom. In 1954 Jason Kipnis Jersey , First Lady Mamie Eisenhower presided over the launch of the USS Nautlius, the first nuclear-powered submarine in history. In 1968, during the Vietnam War, the Battle of Khe Sanh began. Over the course of the six month battle, artillery fired over 150,000 rounds and American aircraft dropped over 100,000 pounds of bombs to defend the Marine base. In July, the American forces withdrew from the base, claiming it was “no longer required.” **And that’s the way it is in Birdland on January 21 - or at least, unless something happens later. They have to announce this coaching staff eventually, right?

ST. PETERSBURG http://www.nationalsfanpr...tt-adams-jersey , Fla. (AP) —h his first three starts. In the end, he and the major league-leading Tampa Bay Rays just kept on rolling.Glasnow allowed two runs over seven innings in winning his fourth consecutive start to begin the season, Avisail Garcia drove in three runs, and the Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 on Tuesday night for their seventh victory in eight games.“I just went out and attacked,” Glasnow said. The Rays, at 13-4, are off to their best start ever. Tampa Bay finished 90-72 last season after a 4-13 beginning.Glasnow (4-0) allowed hits to six of the first 13 batters he faced, but the 6-foot-8 right-hander allowed just one hit over his final 4 2/3 innings and ended the outing by retiring 10 in a row.“I think you could argue that might have been one of his better starts so far just because it didn’t come as easy for him, or it didn’t appear to come easy,” Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said. “He had to make some pitches, probably had to make some adjustments on the fly.”Glasnow had allowed just one run overall in his first three games.“We worked some good ABs off him early and we just didn’t score enough Trea Turner Jersey ,” Orioles first-year manager Brandon Hyde said. “Then he fell into a rhythm.”Garcia hit a two-run homer during a three-run fourth, and added an RBI single in the eighth.Jose Alvarado and Diego Castillo, who earned his second save, each went a perfect inning. The Orioles got an RBI from both Rio Ruiz and Renato Nunez. Dylan Bundy (0-2) gave up three runs and three hits over five innings.“They’re a quick-striking offense,” Bundy said.Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis was in the original lineup but was scratched due to illness.“In BP he started feeling sick and nauseous,” Hyde said. After Tommy Pham walked leading off the fourth, Ji-Man Choi doubled for the Rays’ first hit.Yandy Diaz hit a sacrifice fly before Garcia homered to center off Bundy as Tampa Bay went up 3-2.Bundy, after giving up a major league-high 41 homers last season, has allowed seven in four starts this year.Ruiz ended Glasnow’s 16-inning scoreless streak and put the Orioles up 1-0 with an RBI single in the first.Baltimore took a 2-0 lead on Nunez’s run-scoring double in the third. He has driven in six runs during a seven-game hitting streak.TRAINER’S ROOMOrioles: RHP Alex Cobb (lumbar strain) had a simulated game and is scheduled to start Friday night against Minnesota. … DH/OF Mark Trumbo (right knee surgery) has not resumed hitting. … RHP Nate Karns (right forearm strain) will have his second bullpen session Wednesday.Rays: Ace Blake Snell went on the 10-day IL with a fractured right fourth toe but hopes to miss just one or two starts. … INF Joey Wendle (hamstring) could return this weekend.WELCOME BACKHyde made his managerial debut with a one-day stint as the acting manager for the Miami Marlins in a 2-1 road loss to the Rays on June 19, 2011, after the unexpected resignation of manager Edwin Rodriguez. “That was just a strange day because our manager quit two hours before the game http://www.nationalsfanpr...tt-adams-jersey ,” Hyde said. “We had a little coaching staff meeting and here we go.”CAUGHT TWICE STEALING IN SAME INNING?Rays center fielder Kevin Kiermaier was actually thrown out twice trying to steal a base in the seventh inning. After an infield single, according to scoring rules, he was thrown out on an attempt at second but was called safe because shortstop Jonathan Villar was charged with an error for dropping the ball. Kiermaier was later thrown out trying to steal third.UP NEXTOrioles RHP David Hess (1-2) will start Wednesday night against an unannounced Rays reliever. Hess is 2-1 against both Tampa Bay and Toronto, and winless in 10 decisions against everyone else.__ NEW YORK (AP) — MGM Resorts International became Major League Baseball’s official gambling partner in the U.S. and Japan, a deal made as the sport tries to ensure more prevalent legal sports betting does not lead to any scandals of the type sparked by illegal wagers in its past.“Over the past 18 months we’ve had various senior people in the office involved various aspects of the sports gaming project,” baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said at Tuesday’s announcement. “I think that we have ensured ourselves on the integrity front by updating our policies, making clear what employees and players can and cannot do on the one hand, and on the other developing clear guidelines for the commercial activity that central baseball, meaning Major League Baseball will engage in and similarly the kind of commercial activities that will be allowed on the club level, as well.”The U.S. Supreme Court in May overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, which prohibited every state but Nevada from allowing betting on most sporting events.Baseball was plagued by betting scandals in the 19th and early 20th centuries Joe Blanton Jersey , the biggest a thrown World Series in 1919 that led to lifetime bans for eight Chicago “Black Sox” players imposed by the first baseball commissioner, Kenesaw Mountain Landis.Major League Rule 21 specifies “any player, umpire or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has no duty to perform, shall be declared ineligible for one year” and adds the penalty for betting on a game in which the “bettor has a duty to perform, shall be declared permanently ineligible.”That led to the 1989 investigation of then-Cincinnati manager Pete Rose. The probe concluded Rose bet on the Reds to win with illegal bookmakers, and the career hits leader agreed to a lifetime ban.MLB is considering updated policies that would prohibit employees, including players, from causing bets to be made and from distributing confidential information that could impact betting, a person familiar with the discussions told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the policies were not final.MLB also is discussing its prohibition against team owners also owning entities that provide sports betting, a policy in place before the Supreme Court decision http://www.nationalsfanpr...tt-adams-jersey , the person said.Manfred declined to detail the updated policies, which he said were discussed at last week’s owners’ meeting. He said final revisions were being made.MGM will become an MLB-authorized gambling operator and will promote itself with teams and on the MLB Network, MLB.com and the MLB At Bat app. Manfred said MGM will have a presence at baseball’s top events.“There’s been a huge change in public opinion” on sports gambling, Manfred said.MLB will make a limited part of its Statcast data available to MGM on an exclusive basis. That data also is available to the 30 clubs.“It has presented an opportunity for all sports and baseball in particular,” he added. “We have to take advantage of every opportunity to drive engagement by fans.”Manfred said he does not expect there will be betting windows open at London’s Olympic Stadium during the two-game series in June between the New York Yankees and the World Series champion Boston Red Sox — the first MLB games in Britain.MGM in August became the official gambling partner of the NBA and WNBA, and last month it became the first official sports betting partner of the NHL.MGM Resorts Chairman and CEO Jim Murren spoke about the importance of the MLB deal and said he “will do whatever I can as a fan, as an executive in the gaming industry and as a sports partner to ensure that this is a partnership that will last forever.”
